Our 20th annual Backhausdance Summer Intensive provides high-caliber training programs for aspiring and experienced artists ages 12 to professional. Held in the state-of-the-art dance facilities on the campus of Chapman University, the intensive supports the technical growth and artistic development of the contemporary dancer.

Participants choose from participating in 1, 2, or 3 weeks of the intensive, and have the unique opportunity to study with Artistic Director Jennifer Backhaus, Backhausdance company members, and a diverse roster of esteemed educators and choreographers from around the world. Intensive participants are invited to perform in a fully-produced concert alongside the professional company at the end of the program.

HIGH-CALIBER TRAINING

Train with Artistic Director Jennifer Backhaus, company members, and esteemed educators and choreographers from around the world. Curriculum will emphasize technical growth, artistic development, and creative exploration.

DAILY TECHNIQUE CLASSES

Backhausdance Technique & Repertory, Composition, Contemporary Ballet, Contemporary Jazz, Improvisation, Pilates, Yoga and more.

PERSONAL ATTENTION & Growth

Class sizes will be limited, enabling instructors to provide personal attention and feedback. Curriculum is focused on helping participants develop their unique artistic voice as they collaborate with others.

DIALOGUE & CONNECTION

Connect with instructors, company members and other dancers via one-on-one and small group mentorship and discussions. Each week features an extracurricular evening event to encourage fun and new friendships.

prioritizing SAFE PRACTICES & DANCER WELLBEING

Classes will be thoughtfully crafted to ensure curriculum is strategically designed with the dancers’ safety as a number one priority, and that students have the information they need to sustain their health and wellness while training in the studio.

PERFORMANCE

The program will culminate in the creation of an evening-length performance which will be premiered on August 2, 2024. Friends and family are invited to attend and witness our creation as we celebrate growth and collaboration together.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Through Backhausdance’s B. Mor Summer Dance Intensive Scholarship Fund, the company grants scholarships to its summer intensive based on talent. To be considered, you must attend a Scholarship Audition or submit a Video Audition.

Teen Division
(Ages 12-15)*

Designed for serious, passionate, and curious dancers working at an intermediate to advanced level, the Teen Division provides an in-depth experience for dancers to explore the intricate world of contemporary dance. Emphasis is placed on artistry, risk-taking and problem-solving as dancers develop and grow in their artistic and creative potential.

Advanced Division
(Ages 16-18)*

Geared toward art-minded aspiring dancers working at an advanced level, the Advanced Division provides rigorous training in various disciplines with an emphasis on the unique style of Backhausdance. Curriculum is designed to cultivate strong, technical dancers with the skills necessary to achieve their full artistic potential and make the challenging leap from studio dancer to college or professional.

Collegiate / Professional Division
(Ages 19+)*

The Collegiate / Professional Division provides an immersive experience for collegiate and professional dancers to engage, learn and collaborate with other professionals. Working closely with the Backhausdance artistic team, dancers gain an inside perspective of the creative process as they reflect on and develop their own artistic voice in a professional and collaborative atmosphere.

REGISTRATION

IMPORTANT REGISTRATION DATES:

November 24: Registration opens
March 25: Early pricing ends
June 15: All tuition balances due*
July 8: Last day to register

NON-REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT FOR ALL PROGRAMS:
**A $450 non-refundable deposit is required at registration. Tuition deposits are non-refundable. No exceptions.

REFUND POLICY:
Tuition deposits are non-refundable. No exceptions. See below for refund schedule on remaining tuition:

 

Cancellation before June 15:
100% less $450 non-refundable tuition deposit

Cancellation after June 15:
No refunds. No exceptions.

Covid-Related Cancellation:
In the event of a cancellation of the in-person program due to COVID-19 restrictions determined by the Orange County Health Department, all in-person registrations will be converted to online registrations and any refunds (aside from the $450 non refundable deposit) will be issued in the order of registration payment date. In the event of pandemic-related shutdowns mandated by the county or campus, the $450 nonrefundable deposit will be credited towards 1 week of our virtual program. 


STEP 1:

Submit a non-refundable deposit OR full tuition payment.

STEP 2:

 

Submit balance payment.

Tuition balances must be received no later than June 15 to guarantee participation. To receive the early pricing, balances must be received before March 25.

STEP 3:

 

Receive electronic info packet.

An electronic packet with additional details pertaining to the classes, faculty biographies, recommended attire, evening activities and performances will be sent before June 15.

HOUSING

CHAPERONED HOUSING OPTIONS*

Located at Ayres Hotel Orange

Backhausdance offers chaperoned housing options for participants of all ages at the Ayres Hotel Orange. Just 3 miles from the Chapman University Sandi Simon Center for Dance, the Ayres Hotel partners with Backhausdance to offer single to quad occupancy studio suites for our chaperoned housing students.

The Ayres Hotel Orange is located walking distance from Starbucks, Wendy's, and The Outlets of Orange with more than 120 shops, restaurants and entertainment. The Ayres Hotel Orange provides shuttle service for our chaperoned housing students to and from the Chapman University Sandi Simon Center for Dance.

Each room is equipped with two double beds (quad occupancy rooms require a shared bed), a small in-room refrigerator and microwave. Housing reservations include participation in scheduled evening activities during your stay.

Limited housing available on a first-come, first-served basis. Quad occupancy reservations must be received and paid in full before May 1.
