Backhausdance, Southern California’s critically acclaimed contemporary dance company, invites dancers of all identities and backgrounds to audition for our 2026–2027 season.

We’re looking for artists who are curious, collaborative, and committed—dancers who bring both strong technique and a generous studio presence. Backhausdance is proud to be an inclusive organization that celebrates diversity of people, perspectives, identities, and ideas. QUESTIONS

What is arrival and parking like at the audition location?

The audition will be held at Chapman University’s Sandi Simon Center for Dance, located at 350 N Cypress St. Orange, CA 92866.

To access the building most easily, you can park in free street parking (read your street signs to avoid street sweeping days), or in the nearby parking structure on the corner of Maple and Cypress (just a short walk away). Be sure to avoid parking in the Chapman University permit - only Parking spaces right in front of the Sandi Simon Center.

When you arrive, the audition will take place downstairs in the performance studio. A BD Staff Member will be there to greet you and check you in.

What if I cannot make the in-person audition?

If you are not located in Southern California, or you are unavailable for the Sunday audition date, you may submit for consideration via video audition. Click here to learn more about our video audition guidelines and submission process.

What is the audition like and what are you looking for in a dancer?

The audition will consist of a contemporary ballet barre, modern phrasework, and a creative process / improvisational exploration. We are looking for strong technical dancers who are well versed in improv, partnering, ballet, and modern movement. Dancers with sound individual artistry who also enjoy a collaborative ensemble environment. Currently there are paid open positions for our Performing Company Members, Education team Performers, and Company Apprentices. Apprentices responsibilities include attending class, rehearsal, and understudy roles. 

Are there call backs?

Called back dancers will be invited to attend company class/rehearsal.

What is the contract and rehearsal schedule like?

The upcoming contract with Backhausdance will be from early Sept 2026 to May 2027 with paid rehearsals and performances. BD Education company rehearses on Mondays 9:30-1pm and Performance Company rehearsals take place on Tuesday 9:30-1pm, Thursday 9:30-1pm, and Friday 9:30am-2pm in Orange County.
