The #BDAmbassador Program is designed to recognize passionate, talented and artistically-driven dancers who actively support and partner with BD in its mission to expose and educate the community about the relevance and vitality of concert dance. Harnessing the power of social media and word-of-mouth, BD and its Ambassadors will work together to build excitement, spread the word and help raise awareness of upcoming Backhausdance performances and events.

A #BDAmbassador is dedicated and passionate about BD and wants to transform that dedication into building awareness about Backhausdance in order to further expand and deepen its reach and impact. Ambassadors will help to:

  • Share Backhausdance with family and friends.
  • Actively promote and share upcoming BD performances, events and intensives with their social circles.
  • Pass along BD-related stories on social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
  • Encourage people to participate in spreading the word to their networks.
  • Share their personal #BDSI2016 stories and experiences on social networks.

We value our Ambassadors! In appreciation for all of their hard work, we offer the following benefits and rewards:

  • Full tuition scholarship to the Backhausdance Summer Intensives at Chapman University.
  • Recognition on the #BDAmbassador webpage and #BDSI2016 culmination performance program.
  • A bundle of BD merchandise including items from our newly-designed inventory before it goes on sale to the public.
  • Complimentary participation in Summer Intensive evening activities.
  • Two complimentary tickets to the Summer Intensive culmination performance(s).
  • Early access to BD updates and the opportunity to weigh in on new developments.

Darby C.

New York, NY

Favorite Color: Green
Pre-Performance Jam: "Work It" by Missy Elliott
Hobby Outside of Dance: Photography

Darby just finished her third year at Marymount Manhattan College. She is double majoring in Dance (BFA) and Communication Arts (BA). After graduating from the Commercial Dance Conservatory at Orange County School of the Arts, Darby moved out to New York to pursue her dream of becoming a professional modern dancer. She has performed in works by Robert Battle, Doug Varone, and Sabatino Verlezza. At Marymount, she has trained in multiple modern techniques, including O’Donnell, Nikolais, and Horton. Darby is currently training in Limón and Graham. On her days off, she likes to take class at the Martha Graham studios downtown and immerse herself in the work. Darby began to really appreciate performing and studying modern dance after first attending the Backhausdance intensive. She wants to dance professionally in a modern company that travels around the world. Eventually, Darby hopes to get her masters and teach at a university. In addition to moving, Darby loves studying dance and communication theories. Taking courses on gender, aesthetics, ethics, and global media has provided context for her work. Darby is excited to continue studying new subjects and figuring out how they apply to dance. She has had the incredible opportunity to attend past BD intensives, and is grateful to be a part of the encouraging Backhausdance community. BD has allowed Darby to shape her artistry and discover new ways to use her body as a medium for communication. She is looking forward to the 2016 Backhausdance Summer Intensive.

Favorite Color: Pink
Pre-Performance Jam: Anything by Gem Club or James Blake
Hobby Outside of Dance: Sleep

My name is Shelby Patterson. I am 16 years old and I have been dancing since the age of 2. I currently dance in a pre-professional contemporary company Westside Dance Project and train at Dmitri Kulev Classical Ballet Academy. I also attend Orange County School of the Arts in the Commercial Dance Conservatory. I aspire to become a professional dancer and continue sharing my passion for dance in any way that I can. A dream of mine is to be apart of a professional company and travel and train under great names. Backhausdance has played a major role in my dance career, from giving me great opportunities, giving me amazing insight about the dance world, and allowing me to grow as a dancer. I have attended the BD intensives for two summers now and I always leave so inspired and fueled to continue dancing with all the new knowledge and information they have shared with me. I'm thankful to be involved with BD and for everything Jenny and the other company members have taught me so far.
