Backhausdance, Southern California’s critically-acclaimed contemporary dance company, is seeking dancers of all identities for its 2023-2024 season. Strong modern technique with a solid ballet background is required. Audition will be in-person, Saturday May 13th 1-4pm at Sandi Simon Center for Dance (350 N Cypress St. Orange, CA 92866) with possible call backs.
We are strong advocates for inclusivity and celebrate diversity of people, perspectives, and ideas. Dancers of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Audition FAQ’s
What should I bring to the audition?
Please bring a recent headshot & updated resume to the audition. Dancers should wear form-fitting clothing and should come prepared with ballet shoes and/or socks for center phrase work.
What is the audition like and what are you looking for in a dancer?
We are looking for strong technical dancers who are well versed in improv, partnering, ballet, and modern movement. Dancers with sound individual artistry who also enjoy a collaborative ensemble environment. Currently there are open positions for full performing company members as well apprentices and trainees.
Are there call backs or/and are they in person?
Called back dancers may be invited to attend company class/rehearsal.
What is the contract and rehearsal schedule like?
The upcoming contract with Backhausdance will be from early Sept 2023 to May 2024 with paid rehearsals and performances. Rehearsals take place on Tuesday 9:30-1pm, Thursday 9:30-1pm, and Friday 9:30am-2pm in Orange County.
VIDEO AUDITION GUIDELINES
If you cannot attend the audition, please submit a video audition before Saturday, April 29.
Footage should be between 3 and 5 minutes in length and include the following:
Brief Self-Introduction: Name, Brief Description of Previous Training
Technique Samples: Barre or Center Work (Plies, Tendus, Extensions, Across the Floor Progressions of Turns and/or Jumps, etc)
Phrasework Sample(s): Variations, Improvisations and/or Choreography
Media should be submitted by April 29th.
Fill out the form, and include resume and headshot. Video submissions must be received before April 29th to ensure we can invite any qualifying dancers to our call back. Include password in your description if needed to view your submission.
