We are thrilled that you will be joining us for our 12th Annual Backhausdance Summer Intensives. Below you will find detailed information regarding our intensive faculty, classes, suggested attire, evening activities and helpful tips to make the most of your time with us.

Since its inception in 2003, Backhausdance has performed extensively coast-to-coast as one of Southern California’s premier contemporary modern dance companies. Currently wrapping up its 13th season, the company continually strives to educate the community about the relevance and vitality of concert dance. We are excited to spend a few weeks with you as we continue to push the boundaries on technical growth and artistic development.

All intensive classes are held at:

Chapman University Partridge Dance Center
190 N. Cypress Street

(On the corner of Cypress St. and Maple Ave.)

 

DAY ONE

PARKING

Parking is available free of charge at the Orange Metrolink parking lot on the corner of Lemon and Maple. In addition, you can find non-metered street parking along Cypress and Maple streets. Read the city signs carefully as many streets require a city permit. 

REGISTRATION & SIGN IN

On the first day of the intensive, arrive 30 minutes early to the Partridge Dance Center. This will provide you ample time to find parking, check in at our registration table, tour the facilities and get situated. Registration begins at 8:00am (Pre-Pro), 9:30am (Adv/Pro) and 10:30am (Pedagogy).

WELCOME ORIENTATION & PLACEMENT CLASS

The Welcome Class will include a brief orientation, getting-to-know-you icebreakers, and a series of class exercises and BD phrasework. During this class, the faculty will observe dancers and place them into tracks based on technical skill and artistic maturity. This ensures a positive and challenging experience for all of our participants.

WHAT TO BRING

Each day of the summer intensive includes an average of eight hours of technique class and/or rehearsal. To ensure a healthy and productive experience, come prepared with the following items:

  • a pair of socks for each day,
  • kneepads (optional for modern floorwork),
  • ballet shoes,
  • a yoga mat (for Pilates and Yoga classes),
  • plenty of water and healthy snacks to keep you energized and strong during class, and
  • a sack lunch or money to purchase lunch at a local eatery.

LUNCH BREAK

Participants are given a 45-minute (Pre-Pro) or 1-hour (Adv/Pro, Pedagogy) lunch break daily. Dancers may bring a sack lunch. There is a refrigerator and microwave on site. A map of local eateries will be provided for those wishing to purchase lunch off campus.


HOUSING

We are excited to offer chaperoned housing options at the brand new Ayres Hotel Orange. Just two miles from campus, the Ayres offers single to quad occupancy standard studio suites with complimentary breakfast and shuttle service. Visit our Housing page for more information.

TUITION BALANCES

As a reminder, tuition balances must be paid in full by July 1. Space is limited. If we do not receive your full payment before that date, your spot may be released to a student that is on the wait list.

All Pre-Professional and Adv/Pro dancers participating in Week 3 (August 1 - 6) will have the opportunity to share the stage with Backhausdance in a fully-produced performance of the company’s critically-acclaimed Incandescent at the newly-unveiled Musco Center for the Arts

Incandescent is a 72-minute work choreographed by Jennifer Backhaus that will feature a cast of more than 100 dancers. In daily rehearsals, the intensive participants will work directly with company dancers and Artistic Director Jennifer Backhaus to learn, rehearse, and ultimately, perform the dance live on stage for an audience.


MANDATORY REHEARSALS & PERFORMANCES

Dancers participating in Incandescent must attend ALL rehearsals for the weeks which they are enrolled. Mandatory rehearsals are held daily from 2:15pm - 3:45pm (Pre-Professional) and 4pm to 5:30pm (Adv/Pro). 

An extended spacing and dress rehearsal schedule for Friday, August 5 and Saturday, August 6 will be distributed before the start of the intensive. Plan on a full day of events in the theater. 

COSTUMES

Participating dancers will provide the following:

  • clean, black leggings,
  • black socks, and
  • nude undergarments.

Backhausdance will provide a specially-dyed shirt or tank that must be returned upon completion of performance.

NON-PERFORMING PARTICIPANTS

Students who are not available to perform on August 6 will participate in a variety of Special Studies classes during the afternoon rehearsal block.

A NOTE TO CONFIRMED HOUSING PARTICIPANTS: The housing reservation fee includes admission to the evening activities held during your stay. It is not necessary to register for the events below. Transportation to/from the evening activities and the Ayres Hotel Orange will be arranged. Stay tuned for exclusive, housing-only evening activities coming soon!

Take me out to the ballgame! Join Backhausdance and intensive participants for a night out at the big leagues. The Angels vs. Red Sox game begins at 7:05pm. The Angels Express departs at 6:16pm and returns approximately 40 minutes after the game. Participants can be picked up from the Partridge Dance Center following the event (expected end time: 11pm).

Admission includes:

  • round-trip transportation on the Metrolink’s Angels Express departing from the Orange Station (walking distance from the Partridge Dance Center),
  • a seat in the Upper View section,
  • a hot dog, and
  • a small soda.

NATIONAL CHOREOGRAPHERS INITIATIVE

Be there for the birth of four new ballets created as part of the intensive three-week process of the National Choreographers Initiative. Artistic Director, Molly Lynch has invited nationally-recognized choreographers Tom Gold, Nicole Haskins, Stephanie Martinez and Ben Needham-Wood to create works on sixteen professional dancers from ballet companies across the country. Group transportation will not be provided for this event. Carpools may be arranged if necessary.

Admission includes:

  • a balcony seat at the NCI performance.

BOWLING AT ROUND 1

Come bowl with us! Backhausdance invites you to test your athletic abilities outside of the dance studio at Round 1. Our annual creative bowling contest is always a hit! Come hang out and laugh with us. Group transportation will not be provided for this event. Carpools may be arranged if necessary.
